Michael Kozmich Bakhteev
was born in Moscow, Russia
in 1938 and died there in 1999

Michael Kozmich Bakhteev - a doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences, professor at the the Geology and Geological Mapping Chair in the Moscow Geological and Exploration Institute (MGRI) 1, professor and head at the Environment and Earth Sciences Department in the Dubna International University of Nature, Society and Man (Dubna, Moscow oblast), a highly qualified bedrock mapping geologist, editor of the State Geological Map of the Soviet Union 1 : 50 000 scale (1984), the author section "Geological Mapping" in the book "Mining Encyclopedia" T. V, M. Publ. "Soviet Encyclopedia", 1991, p. 98-99.

All of students and friends are saddened by the passing of Michael Bakhteev. For more than forty years Michael Bakhteev, Doctor of Geological Science, was an eloquent, passionate voice for the students at Moscow Geological and Exploration Institute.

As a tutor, geologist and scientific figure at one time, Michael described for an entire generation - the generation of the regional geological mapping age – the middle of 60s in Russia. His unbelievable ability to explain the complexities of geology inspired students to look up into the geological maps and outcrops in wonder.

Through such efforts as the lectures and practical classes, Michael reached - and touched – hundreds students around the former Soviet Union.

Michael was an early teacher of the idea that the individual student’s curriculums should to be the central part of the new education programs in Russia.

Dr. Bakhteev for the first time in the former USSR created the Individual Curriculums for numerous students, who had a strong background in geological sciences, in response to demands from the Geology and Exploration Expeditions (state enterprises) for highly qualified personnel. The Geology and Exploration Expeditions required people with a skill set that would allow them to contribute immediately upon entry into the special working environment

Michael Kozmich also was at the forefront of constructing Plate Tectonics’ legend for Kazakhstan geological mapping records.

Students remember his vision, his eloquence, and his intellect, and they miss him.

I still remember ... all my passes in January under the sign of Bakhteev. As it is clear I see him in my dreams, think about him, almost always with a smile, I remember all the cases with him, mostly funny. ... We remember and love him.

Abstract: The allochthonous northwestern and central tectonic sheets of the Valaginskii Group have been studied in the eastern Kamchatka. Cherty rocks of the Poputnaya and Golubaya sequences yield here abundant radiolarians.

The results of radiolarian analysis imply that both sequences accumulated concurrently in the late Campanian time. Data on taxonomic composition, morphology, and abundance rates of radiolarian taxa from the Valaginskii Ridge suggest that some of their assemblages populated an ecotone between the high-latitude and temperate zones.

Abstract: Types of lateral variation and zoning of magmatism are discussed with reference to volcanic belts at the continental margins of Asia.

It is shown that lateral variations, typical of these belts, from calc-alkalic to alkalic, and then potassic rocks with increasing distance from interaction zones between oceanic and continental plates, can be found in other geologic settings such as boundary zones between volcanic belt segments dominated by rocks of different silica contents and transcurrent faults cutting across volcanic belts, where lateral variations could be caused by factors of different origin and significance.

Even when known over extensive areas, asymmetric magmatic zoning can be a constituent of some more complex zoning. Of great importance is the knowledge of the lateral variation patterns of the major-element distribution in magmatic rocks at different evolution stages of volcanic belts, because they could be modified substantially during the histories of their formation, and asymmetric magmatic zoning could be replaced by symmetric magmatic zoning.

The latter could be caused by a rising mantle diapir (plume), or be a consequence of destructive processes that operated at the edge of the continent. The best data for the reliable interpretation of magmatic zoning are provided by basic rocks that were usually emplaced during the early stages of the history of volcanic belts. They can be correlated with the processes that operated in Benioff seismic zones, which is extremely useful for the reliable identification of the frontal zones of volcanic belts in continental margins.

  • Abstract: Grechishkin thrust zone is the main ophiolite-free collisional suture in eastern Kamchatka includes, at the Kronotsky Isthmus latitude, (i) variously trending thrust faults that dip NW and SE, (ii) a system of sliced, general-compression folds of several orders, (iii) sedimentary mélanges, and (iv) tectono-gravitational mixtites (olistostromes).

The Grechishkin thrust acquired its present inner structure through a long-lasting, Eocene through terminal Miocene to Early Pliocene transverse compression, as the Kronotsky block was obducted from the southeast.

Sedimentary complexes that are involved in the thrust were deposited on the slopes of independent island arcs that emerged on a mafic basement incorporating sialic crustal blocks.

The paleomagnetic data obtained, for the first time, indicate that the formation of the volanoclastic series of Tamima nape took place near the equator, and the formation of ophiolites of Baer-Bassit nape occurred at paleolatitudes of 8-19*N (gabbroids at 8*N, complex of parallel dikes at 14*N, basalts at 19*N)
